The Ninth Day of Spring (and counting . . .)

Today is cold and dark and wet. It is raining hard again today. It's pouring. The duck is hiding in the dog house. He usually enjoys the rain, but this morning it is falling hard. A hummingbird is shivering on my front porch. When it rains like this, he waits it out perched on the twig bench on the porch.

This is the kind of day when we page through our nature journals, remembering springs and summers past and anticipating the warm weather to come. We drink hot tea and examine our garden plans. Rose and I snuggle on the couch over a seed catalogue, while the boys look through our nature encyclopedias. We talk. This year will be the year we finally find a hummingbird nest in the brambles and it will have babies in it and we will watch it and. . . in the meantime we enjoy someone else's online hummingbird nest pictures. We have come back to this site repeatedly since we found it last week. The hummingbirds online look so warm. Ours shivers on the porch.
