At long last, here is THE Hot Cross Buns recipe. After three years of experimentation, this one was unanimously approved this year.
In the pan of the bread machine put:
2/3 c warm milk
3 T melted butter
1 egg
3 c flour
1/3 c white sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg (plus a dash)
1/4 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp orange zest
dash orange extract
1 T yeast
1/2 c dried currants
Set to DOUGH cycle and start. Form into 12 rolls. Cut crosses into the tops. Place into a greased pan (7x11 or 9x13 would work) and let rise for 40-60 minutes. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes. Cool.
Make icing with:
1/2 c powdered sugar
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 tsp milk
Drizzle over the crosses cut into the buns.
